NFL Week 8 Preview: Cincinnati and Jacksonville Lead, but the Price Matters
Cincinnati at 75.6% and Jacksonville at 74.3% lead our Week 8 winner forecasts. The three primetime picks are more modest: Green Bay 58.9%, Washington 55.5% and Seattle 56.0%. All three became larger spread favorites at BetMGM between Tuesday and Wednesday, but those moves do not increase the model’s confidence.
This preview covers 14 games, October 29–November 2. The forecasts were actually issued Wednesday, October 28, at 2:30:49 p.m. CDT, after Tuesday’s weekly run was interrupted. Recovery reused completed models where supported, finished the required validation and preserved prior weeks’ forecasts. This is the completed Week 8 forecast set; there was no issued Tuesday version to compare against it.
The models include games through Week 7 and retain Tuesday’s saved spread and total benchmarks. Wednesday’s prices were captured separately at 2:32:29 p.m. CDT. Keeping those timestamps distinct matters when a forecast refers to a line that has already moved.
Green marks the predicted outright winner. Spread and total selections answer different questions and appear below.
The three primetime games
Thursday, October 29: Carolina at Green Bay, 7:15 p.m. CDT. All five winner models favor the Packers, but their confidence differs considerably: Elo gives Green Bay 73.4%, while the other four sit around 54.8%–55.9%. The aggregate is a moderate 58.9% lean. Its original market selections are Green Bay −3.5 at 51.3% and Under 48 at 53.6%.
The separate point model projects Green Bay 23.17–Carolina 21.65, a 1.52-point margin and 44.82 total. That margin is smaller than both the original −3.5 and Wednesday’s −4. BetMGM’s Packers moneyline also moved from −190 to −200, requiring 66.7% wins to break even before any adjustment for bookmaker margin—above the raw model estimate.
Protection is a useful matchup question. Jordan Love has thrown for at least 274 yards in three consecutive games, while injuries have disrupted Green Bay’s interior line. Can the Packers protect long enough to turn passing production into points on a short week? Both teams are coming off losses: Carolina fell 43–13 to Tampa Bay and Green Bay lost 20–17 at Detroit. Those results are already in the training inputs. Panthers opponent preview, Week 7 recap.
Wednesday’s final report rules out Sean Rhyan, Travis Glover and Zaire Franklin for Green Bay. Matthew Golden, Devonte Wyatt, Anthony Campbell and Brenton Cox Jr. are questionable. Carolina ruled out Jaelan Phillips, Damien Lewis, Akayleb Evans and Torricelli Simpkins III; Bobby Brown III is questionable. Bryce Young and Jalen Coker have no game designation. These are final injury designations checked at approximately 3:10 p.m. CDT Wednesday; Thursday’s complete inactive lists are still pending. Packers final report, Panthers final report.
Sunday, November 1: Philadelphia at Washington, 7:20 p.m. CST. Washington’s 55.5% winner lean has three of five models behind it. The original spread selection is Washington −5 at 53.1%; the total lean is Over 40 at 52.1%. The point forecast is Washington 22.85–Philadelphia 17.20, a 5.66-point margin and 40.05 combined points.
The question is whether Philadelphia can sustain more offense after its 38–21 loss to Dallas, and whether Washington can create enough separation to meet a growing handicap. BetMGM moved Washington −5 → −5.5, while its moneyline stayed −235. That moneyline needs 70.1% wins to break even, substantially above the model’s 55.5%. The final personnel picture belongs in the Sunday update; this Wednesday preview does not assume a quarterback change or assign the spread move to injury news.
Monday, November 2: Chicago at Seattle, 7:15 p.m. CST. Seattle is the 56.0% winner pick, with four of five models agreeing. The separate spread lean is Chicago +3 at 52.3%, and the total lean is Over 46.5 at 54.7%. Seattle winning and Chicago covering are compatible outcomes.
The point model projects Seattle 25.93–Chicago 23.87, a 2.06-point margin and 49.80 total. That is a useful comparison with Seattle’s 20–3 win over Kansas City and Chicago’s 30–24 win over New England last week. BetMGM now has Seattle −3.5, so a three-point Seahawks win would lose that favorite spread bet while winning Chicago +3.5. The saved 52.3% belongs to Chicago +3, however; it is not a newly calculated probability at +3.5. Bears game guide.
Clock reminder: Thursday uses daylight time; Sunday’s and Monday’s games use standard time after the November 1 clock change. All times below are Central.

“Models” counts the five base winner models selecting the ensemble’s side; they share information and are not independent votes. LAR means the Rams; LAC means the Chargers. Every spread and total probability applies only at the displayed original benchmark. These are model leans across the slate, not a list of qualifying bets.

| LV at NYJ | Sun Nov 1, noon CST | NYJ 56.4% | 4/5 | NYJ −1 (52.2%) | Under 45.5 (54.3%) |
| CLE at PIT | Sun Nov 1, noon CST | PIT 60.9% | 5/5 | CLE +3.5 (53.3%) | Over 39.5 (55.1%) |
| ATL at TB | Sun Nov 1, noon CST | TB 55.4% | 4/5 | TB −2 (50.4%) | Over 46 (53.4%) |
| LAC at LAR | Sun Nov 1, 3:05 PM CST | LAR 67.3% | 5/5 | LAC +6.5 (50.9%) | Over 44.5 (50.6%) |
| KC at DEN | Sun Nov 1, 3:25 PM CST | KC 51.7% | 3/5 | KC −1.5 (53.0%) | Over 41 (52.4%) |
| NE at MIA | Sun Nov 1, 3:25 PM CST | NE 56.8% | 4/5 | MIA +7 (53.1%) | Over 44.5 (51.5%) |
| PHI at WAS | Sun Nov 1, 7:20 PM CST | WAS 55.5% | 3/5 | WAS −5 (53.1%) | Over 40 (52.1%) |
| CHI at SEA | Mon Nov 2, 7:15 PM CST | SEA 56.0% | 4/5 | CHI +3 (52.3%) | Over 46.5 (54.7%) |
Kansas City exposes a limitation worth keeping visible: its 53.0% chance to cover −1.5 exceeds its 51.7% chance to win outright. Covering that spread requires winning. These separately fitted outputs therefore do not form a coherent joint probability forecast; the two Kansas City leans should not be presented as mutually reinforcing confidence.
The strongest favorites still have spread questions
Cincinnati and Jacksonville lead outright, not across every market. The point model projects Cincinnati 26.91–Tennessee 16.49, a 10.42-point margin just below the 10.5-point handicap. Tennessee +10.5 is the slight spread preference even though Cincinnati is the clear winner pick.
Jacksonville’s projected 28.24–21.84 score against Indianapolis gives it a 6.40-point margin, below the saved −8. Its separate −8 cover probability is only 50.5%, and Wednesday’s BetMGM line has grown to −10. A 74.3% winner forecast is not a 74.3% chance of covering that larger handicap.
Buffalo and Pittsburgh are winner picks with visiting underdogs selected against the spread. Baltimore +3.5 and Cleveland +3.5 can cover without winning outright. Buffalo’s move to −3 changes the available terms; the old Baltimore +3.5 probability cannot simply be reused at +3.
The Rams and New England have similar distinctions. The Rams are 67.3% to win, but Chargers +6.5 is the narrow spread lean at 50.9%. New England is 56.8% outright, while Miami +7 gets 53.1% to cover. Dallas, Detroit, the Jets and Tampa Bay are selected in both winner and original spread markets, but several cover estimates barely clear 50%. Kansas City’s 51.7% winner lean is the closest call of the week.
Wednesday’s market movement
The table compares Tuesday, October 27, at 1:10:39 p.m. CDT with Wednesday, October 28, at 2:32:29 p.m. CDT, using BetMGM throughout. These are our first saved weekly observation and the Wednesday snapshot, not verified opening or closing lines. Spreads and moneylines below are for the home team.

| LV at NYJ | −1 → −1.5 | 45.5 → 45.5 | −110 → −125 |
| CLE at PIT | −3.5 → −3.5 | 39.5 → 39.5 | −190 → −200 |

| KC at DEN | +1.5 → +1.5 | 41 → 40.5 | +100 → +100 |
| NE at MIA | +7 → +7 | 44.5 → 44 | +280 → +260 |
| PHI at WAS | −5 → −5.5 | 40 → 40 | −235 → −235 |
| CHI at SEA | −3 → −3.5 | 46.5 → 46.5 | −175 → −175 |
Eight spreads and six totals changed. Jacksonville’s two-point spread move is the largest; Atlanta–Tampa Bay’s total fell a full point. Seattle also illustrates the role of price: −3 at −115 became −3.5 at −105, while Chicago +3 at −105 became +3.5 at −125. Chicago gained half a point of protection but became more expensive to back.
The saved Green Bay −3.5 probability of 51.3% does not describe Wednesday’s −4. Likewise, Under 48 at 53.6% cannot be relabeled Under 47.5: exactly 48 points would push the original under and lose the new one. Changed thresholds require their own estimates.
What could be behind a move?
Injury updates can change expected scoring and the balance between teams. Green Bay’s confirmed offensive-line absences raise a protection question, while Carolina losing Jaelan Phillips may reduce its pressure options. Golden’s uncertain availability adds another offensive variable. Those effects can point in different directions; an injury does not automatically mean a lower total. Information already expected by bettors may also be reflected in the earlier price. Our two snapshots do not establish which update, if any, caused Green Bay’s move.
Weather can matter most when it changes passing or kicking conditions. The National Weather Service’s Thursday-night Green Bay forecast, checked Wednesday afternoon, calls for mostly clear skies and west-northwest wind of 3–8 mph. That provides little basis for calling the half-point total drop weather-driven. A later forecast of stronger wind or precipitation would be relevant to revisit, but this is an outlook rather than observed game conditions. NWS Green Bay forecast.
Wagering activity and sportsbook decisions can move the number or the price. New bets, exposure to an outcome and competitors’ adjustments can lead a book to change its offers without a fresh injury headline. We have no ticket counts, stake totals or bettor identities in these captures, so we cannot label Jacksonville’s jump “sharp money” or assign a specific cause to the other moves. The report shows what changed; the matchup context explains plausible influences, not proven causation.
The confidence check before kickoff
Week 7 finished 8–6 on winners, 4–9–1 against the spread and 7–7 on totals. The season winner record is 63/106, or 59.4%, excluding one tie. The recap shows why correct winners and accurate point projections need separate evaluation.
Monitoring is now YELLOW: winner log loss is 0.70046 across 42 binary games from original Weeks 5–7, just above the project’s 0.70 warning threshold. The separate recent accuracy window is 15/28, or 53.6%. This flags weaker recent probability quality; it neither subtracts a fixed amount from every forecast nor suspends selections under the current rules.
The weekly run passed its native validation checks, but the probabilities remain raw and uncalibrated. Passing pipeline checks does not validate the displayed percentages as precise odds of success. Spread and total aggregates also retain legacy proxy contributions alongside trained market models.
Wednesday’s saved screen delivered 49 qualifying offers across books: 44 moneyline and five spread offers, consolidated into seven distinct recommendations: six moneyline and one spread. No total qualified. Those are screening outputs, not placed bets or realized returns. Missing bookmaker quotes are not treated as unchanged, and probabilities are not transferred to different lines.
Thursday’s focused preview will revisit Carolina–Green Bay with the next price snapshot and game-day availability. For now, the record starts with Cincinnati and Jacksonville as the strongest winner picks, three modest primetime favorites, and every original spread and total preserved for grading.
Source note: Model and market figures come from the October 28 preview handoff and same-book movement report. The official NFL schedule provides the fixture reference. Predictions were issued Wednesday at 2:30:49 p.m. CDT; prices were observed at 2:32:29 p.m. CDT. Final injury designations and weather are context, not manual changes to the frozen forecasts.
